plein air painting

Plein Air Paintings of Cape Cod by Artist Chris Gillis now available

In the summer of 1899, the illustrious Charles Hawthorne established the Cape Cod School of Art, drawing in aspiring painters from all backgrounds, with as many as 90 students enrolled by 1915. His distinctive impressionist painting style, executed en plein air, beckoned artists to capture the scenic beauty of the area painting from life. Particularly on the captivating beaches and surrounding landscapes. The artistic legacy of Cape Cod spans across picturesque locations such as Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet, Chatham, Harwich, Brewester and Eastham, with the influential Edward Hopper himself leaving his mark on these shores.

Reflecting on my own personal journey, I have dedicated over 15 years to the art of plein air painting on Cape Cod. Through this experience, I have learned to cherish the profound value of setting up my easel amidst the natural splendor and capturing the scenes before me – each stroke capturing a snapshot of that timeless moment.

I am thrilled to share these cherished paintings with you, available for purchase in my store. Each artwork will bear the exact location on a map and a timestamp, serving as a testament to the unique and fleeting beauty of Cape Cod captured in each piece.

This painting depicts a typical summer morning in July on Cape Cod. The sunlight is casting beams across the trees and illuminating the marsh. The water is calm as the sun rises in the morning, bringing the heat with it. During the summer, this cove becomes filled with boats as families head to Pleasant Bay for sailing or fishing.
